Boy Harsher Live
Boy Harsher brought their particular strain of darkwave to Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall on September 30, filling the room with the kind of tension that has become inseparable from Jae Matthews and Augustus Muller’s live presence.
For all the control built into Boy Harsher’s music, there is something distinctly physical about seeing it performed. Muller anchors the machinery behind synths, electronics and guitar while Matthews continually pushes against it, her movement giving the songs an unpredictability that the recordings only hint at. New material from GET MEAN sat alongside the colder pulse of their back catalogue without breaking the spell.
It’s the contradiction that makes Boy Harsher work: machine-like precision delivered with very human volatility. The set eventually gave way to “Pain,” their enduring club-floor staple, closing a night that often felt less like watching electronic music than being pulled inside it.
